Rollercoaster

The highs are SO high, but damn the lows. The LOWS!

First, let me just say I'm praying for the 5 people on board the Navy helicopter that went down in San Diego last night. That, as a wife of a Navy helicopter pilot, is the kind of news that kicks you in the stomach. It doesn't matter if you know them... they are a part of your family. The Navy helicopter community is pretty small and very tight-knit. No word yet on survivors. Chris and I were in San Diego until October, and I imagine he knows whoever was on board. Please keep these 5 and their families in your prayers!!

What a week!! I can't believe I haven't posted in a week. Ok, yes I can - I had a 20 page paper due last night, and couldn't really justify blogging until that was done. Trying to write an email, let alone a research paper while visiting family is much like online shopping. Should only be done late at night and while everyone is sleeping. Got the paper done (after staying up until 4:30a the night before), but let's back up. I got an email from my fabulous husband on Tuesday (last week) telling me he had a surprise. Wednesday night about 11 HE CALLED!!!! They did a quick overnight port visit somewhere in Asia, and was able to find a phone. Such a little thing, but when you haven't talked to your spouse on the phone for 3 weeks, kind of a big deal!! That would be considered a huge high. Talked to him for a few minutes and told him he had to call his parents, and to call me back. He finally called back around midnight, and we talked for over an hour. It was awesome! He's doing really well and it sounds like he's having a good time. He's on a boat -- it's kind of got to be like my senior year of college spring break cruise with 34 of my closest sorority sisters, right?

Thursday my youngest sister graduated from grade school. Not normally a huge lifetime event, but since she is the youngest of the six kids in my fam, it marks the end of 18 years my poor parents have had someone at that school- the end of an era!! Chris was supposed to call again before he got back on the boat, and likely right in the middle of her graduation ceremony. Rest assured, I sat on the aisle, and waited, phone in hand. I wouldn't even put it down to take pictures. I went to the library during the day and had my phone perched on my computer so I could see it ring. I didn't so much as go to the bathroom Wednesday without my phone within a 1 foot radius. It was pretty bad. Following graduation, we went to my older sister's house for a drink. My mom and I were getting in the car to go chaperon the graduation party (my poor lil sister!!) and she called the house phone to check voicemails. He called the house. I missed it. He didn't have my cell phone number with him. I was devastated. My mom immediately called my dad to come pick me up in the parking lot so I didn't have to go in to the 8th grade dance. The only comic relief was that when I thought he pulled up, I opened the car door illuminating the black tears all over my face. The poor guy who was actually not my dad was, um, well mortified when I walked up to his car. Talk about a hot mess!!! Fortunately my dad did pull up shortly thereafter so I no longer looked like I was "soliciting business" in the church parking lot.

So, no more phone calls from the hubs, but I will hopefully hear from him again in a couple weeks, and God willing, see him in Japan in no time!! Saturday night we had a graduation party for the three graduates here. Between my little sister, my brother Tanner (graduated from KU on Sunday.. Go Jayhawks!!), and his awesome girlfriend (graduated from North Georgia 2 weeks ago) and then my three sibling-in-laws (all graduated from Regis University May 3), graduationpalooza has finally come to a close. This weekend some of my fave cousins are coming to town from South Dakota. Jill is a few years older than I am and we look more or less like twins, although she's 8 months pregnant with her third right now. The fact that I look so much like her has prompted my family on numerous occasions, (including an hour sit down with the whole fam LAST SUMMER) to tell me I'm adopted; they maintain that Karen & Glenn (jill's parents) couldn't afford a fourth child and my parents really wanted a second one, so they gave me away. Awesome.

More later, I am in desperate need of a shower. My dad and brother are on a 5:30am work out kick, and I went with them again this morning - ran 5.05 miles, WOOP!!

I'm glad you got to talk to him! I know how exciting that is when you haven't heard their voice for awhile.

For what it's worth, I think your handing his deployment with alot of style and grace!
